Reading Environment Agency gauges: what the level number means
The Environment Agency runs hundreds of hydrometric stations across England, and the lake and reservoir gauges among them publish a single number: water level, in metres above the station's own datum. It moves up and down — but what it means for your slip depends on the water.
Stage: height above a station datum
An EA water level is the height of the water surface above a fixed reference established at the gauge (some lake gauges report in metres above Ordnance Datum, mAOD — actual sea-level height). On a lake or reservoir it tracks the true surface; its absolute value is less meaningful to a boater than its trend and your local knowledge of what number means "slip unusable."

Lake and reservoir levels move slowly compared to rivers — a meaningful drawdown or refill takes days — which is exactly why the trend line is so useful for planning a weekend.
Seasonal rise and fall
English lake levels breathe with the seasons. Winter rain fills most waters to their banks; regulated reservoirs are deliberately drawn down through late summer and autumn, then refill over the wet months. Winter spates on lake-fed rivers show up first at outlet gauges. Dam-regulated waters can move quickly after a release — a half-metre drop over a weekend is possible on managed systems.
Gaps in the record are usually maintenance or telemetry, not ice: a gauge that goes quiet for a day or two in summer is typically being serviced, and reporting resumes automatically. If a gauge stays silent for a week, treat it as retired from the live network and check the EA station page.

Water level and wind compound each other at the slip. A falling level plus a strong onshore breeze makes steep, tired waves at the launch; a falling level plus offshore wind exposes mud and gravel you have to drag across.
