UKV vs GFS vs ICON: which forecast to trust on a lake
The wind number on your phone is an opinion — a model's best simulation of the atmosphere, discretized onto a grid. Two apps disagreeing by 8 knots is not one of them being wrong; it is two models, two grids, two philosophies. Knowing which model shines when makes you a better forecaster than any single app.
The models that matter
UKV (the Met Office's United Kingdom Variable-resolution model) is the home-team hero: a grid that tightens to about 2 km over the UK, updating every hour out to ~54 hours. It explicitly models terrain, coastlines, sea breezes, and — critically for inland sailing — thermal lake breezes and gusts. Its weakness is range: beyond two days you are back on the globals.
The globals are the pattern-setters: GFS (NOAA, ~13–22 km), ICON (German weather service, ~11 km), and ECMWF (the European centre, widely treated as the accuracy benchmark). All three are decent at large-scale patterns days out, but their grids blur the local circulations an inland sailor actually sails in. ECMWF in particular publishes at coarse resolution for its free tier, so treat app numbers claiming "ECMWF" with care.
The practical playbook
Days 3–7: trust the globals (GFS/ICON/ECMWF) for the pattern — is there a gradient wind at all, is a front coming — and ignore exact numbers. Day 2: start comparing models; if they agree within a couple of knots, confidence is high. Today: trust UKV, especially for the timing of the afternoon fill-in, gust magnitudes, and shower initiation. Disagreement between UKV and the globals on a summer afternoon usually means the globals missed the lake breeze.
